Spiders

Spiders are not insects they are arachnids and are actually closely related to mites, ticks and scorpions. Spiders have two body parts (insects have three), eight legs (insects have six) and usually six to eight eyes (insects usually have two compound eyes) The average life span of a spider is usually one to two years. bedbug-biting.jpg

Of the thousands of species found in Canada, few are actually considered a health threat. In fact, spiders are generally considered beneficial as they control other pests in the home and garden as they feed on other insects.

The three most common household spiders in Ontario are the Black-footed Spider, Cheiracanthium mildei, a species introduced from southern Europe and the House Spider, Achaearanea tepidariorum, which is responsible for most cobwebs found in buildings. The Zebra Spider, Salticus scenicus, is a small jumping spider often seen on vertical surfaces such as walls and doorways.

It is normal to have spiders in and around your home. However, if spiders are out of control M.D. Pest Control can provide a residual pesticide application to return the population to a natural level. This treatment is performed when the population of spiders is exceeding the tolerance of the homeowner, often the case if you live near a body of water or green space. It will be required for all people and pets to remain out of treated areas for a minimum of 4 hours. M.D. Pest Control recommends that people with asthma, heart conditions, women who are pregnant and children under the age of 2 years remain out of treated areas for 24 hours.
