The
Cure For Your Pest Problems™
MD Pest Control
Spring is here again and after such a mild winter we are expecting
to see a very busy insect season ahead. Carpenter Ants and Pavement
Ants have already been active in Toronto area homes in early March
this year… typically we do not see activity before April or May.
Although some ant colonies are active indoors all winter such as
pharaoh ants, most are seasonal pests. These include Carpenter Ants,
Pavement Ants and Field Ants. Ant populations have not be affected
by the warmer winter season but other insects such as Wasps will
likely be seen in higher numbers as they will have overwintered
quite well with very few being killed by extreme cold. Wasp activity
is not expected to peak until mid-summer.
Carpenter ants are the most common wood-destroying insects found
in Toronto homes. Carpenter ants are also one of the most challenging
ants for pest control professionals. Carpenter Ants do not eat wood
rather they excavate cavities in the wood often building their colonies
inside our homes. Structural damage can occur… fortunately this
usually takes several years. A Carpenter Ant infestation can be
very complex our licensed exterminators are trained to protect your
home from these potentially destructive pests. Our comprehensive
treatment for carpenter ants is effective and guaranteed for one
year.
Pavement Ants are the most common indoor ant pest in Toronto and
the GTA. Pavement Ants feed on a wide variety of foods. Sweets including
sugar, nectar, fruits, and syrups are readily taken. Grease, dead
insects, small seeds, even pet foods are also collected. Nearly
any morsel of food that falls to the floor will be consumed. Using
baits to control pavement ants can be challenging due to the competing
food sources. Pavement ants are also responsible for the sand mounds
on interlocking patios, walkways and driveways. It looks harmless
at first but if not exterminated these ants will move significant
quantities of the sand base and your interlocking stones will shift
and become unlevel. The licensed exterminators of M.D. Pest Control
will apply a residual insecticide to eliminate Pavement Ant infestations
on your property.
Field Ants as their name suggests are commonly found outdoors,
they rarely nest in homes but will often enter in search of sweets.
There are many species of field ants in the greater Toronto area
these ants infest the lawns, and gardens around our homes. Colony
size can vary considerably with some nests as large as 94,000 ants.
Before your house is overrun with thousands of field ants call M.D.

Proper ant control programs depend greatly on the species of ant
involved. M.D. Pest Control uses the most effective, safe and environmentally
friendly techniques to eliminate your ant infestation.

Bed Bugs
DESCRIPTION: Bed bugs have made a huge comeback
in the Toronto area after being absent for many years. A bed bug
infestation is very complex and will require the help of a professional
exterminator.
HABITAT: Bed bugs can be found in any environment
that humans occupy, clean or dirty this pest has no preference.
Bed bugs are transported by man as we travel, bed bugs hitch a ride
in furniture, luggage and possibly on our clothing. Once bed bugs
are introduced into a building they will multiply quickly. Bed bugs
in Toronto and the GTA are not easily eliminated with the use of
pesticide due to high resistance to most insecticides. Bed bugs
may also be present even if the building has been vacant for as
long as one year.
LIFE CYCLE: Bed bugs are active at night and hide
during the day. After mating, females lay white, oval eggs (1/16-inch
long) into cracks and crevices. An individual bed bug can lay 200-250
eggs in her lifetime. The eggs hatch in about 10 days and the newly
emerged bed bug nymphs seek a blood meal. Immature nymphs molt five
times (i.e., they shed their outer exoskeleton in order to grow)
before reaching adulthood. They need to feed at least once before
each molt, although they could feed as often as once a day. There
may be three or more generations per year. All ages are found in
a reproducing population. Immature bed bugs may live for several
months without feeding while adults may survive as long as one year
without a meal. Under normal circumstances, adult bed bugs will
live for about ten to eleven months feeding every 3 to 5 days.
TYPE OF DAMAGE: Bed bugs are not known to spread
any disease. Reactions to bed bug bites will vary from one person
to another, with some individuals having no reaction whatsoever.
Others range from a small, red, slightly raised, itchy spot to severe
painful bruising. Some people react immediately after a bed bug
bite and others have a delayed reaction as long a 14 days following
the bite. It is possible to go on vacation for a week and be bit
while away and return to react to the bed bug bite once home again.
Although not a health hazard many people find it difficult to get
a good night sleep once they determine bed bugs are present.
Control of bed bug infestations will require a professional exterminator.
